The
house was originally a crofter’s cottage built about 150
years ago, with a byre for the cows and two large multipurpose
outbuildings at the back for crofting implements. It later became
the home of the Matheson family who built and operated schooners
up and down the West Coast. Later it was the house and workshop
of Alec the Plummer, where a number of the local lads undertook
their apprenticeships. The house is traditional in design, warm
and cosy inside with thick stone walls and much of the traditional
tongue-and-groove wooden wall lining inside.
The house
has two double bedrooms, two twin bedrooms, two bathrooms, a living
room and kitchen, and as mentioned - a large conservatory which
serves both as an informal sitting area and also as a dining room.
There are two outdoor picnic tables (one at the back, and one
in the front garden) and BBQ facilities for eating and entertaining
outside.
The mezzanine layout of the cottage provides:
-
Two
twin rooms and a shared bathroom on the ground floor
-
The
open plan kitchen and dining room and conservatory on the
mezzanine level with floor to ceiling glass windows opening
out onto the alpine garden terrace at the back
-
The
living room & master bedroom on the second floor overlooking
the front garden and sea
